          The Impacts

The Oakland Streetcar could bring 20,000+ new residents and 20,000+ new jobs to Oakland, while reducing CO2 emissions by 100,000 tons annually.
The Oakland Streetcar would help fashion greater Downtown Oakland into an attractive destination to live, work, and shop.  As development-oriented transit, the fixed, long-term investment of the Oakland Streetcar would catalyze the creation of new transit-oriented neighborhoods along Broadway, from Jack London Square to Downtown to Uptown to Upper Broadway.  The total economic development potential amounts to:

          Development Potential:
          • 10,000-12,000 housing units
          • 2.5-3.7 million square feet of retail space
          • 4.1-4.5 million sq feet office space

          Translating to:
          • 21,000-24,000 new residents
          • 20,000-24,000 new jobs
          • 37,000-44,000 new construction jobs
          • $600-$800 million in new sales annually
          • $4-$6 million in annual sales tax revenue
          • 99,000-114,000 tons CO2 saved annually (42% savings relative to suburban sprawl)
          • 4.9-5.7 million gallons gasoline saved annually (53% savings relative to suburban sprawl)
          • 2.3-2.7 million gallons water saved annually (76% savings relative to suburban sprawl)

Households in Portland's Pearl District emit 65% less CO2 than their suburban counterparts.
